Having difficulty with one of your appliances? Here are some of the most common issues and what you can do to fix them.
Refrigerators:
Q: What do I do if the refrigerator isn’t keeping food cold enough?
A: Before you call for service, there are a few things you should check. Does the refrigerator have power? Is the cord tightly plugged in to the outlet? If not, make certain the outlet is working by plugging another appliance such as a lamp into it.If you still have no power, check the circuit breakers to make sure one of this hasn’t been tripped. Finally, does the refrigerator door close completely? Is something blocking it?
Stoves, Ovens, Ranges, and Cooktops:
Q: I can’t get my stove or oven to heat up.
A: This can be caused by a number of things. Have the circuit breakers be tripped? If so, you’ll want to make sure they’re in the correct position. For an electric stove, you should have 30-50 amp double breakers. For a gas stove, you’ll have a single 20 amp breaker. If you have a gas stove, check your gas shut-off valve to be sure it’s turned on. If the valve is off and you smell gas, immediately open the windows and doors to vent the gas before calling SDG&E for help. Also note that you shouldn’t use your oven’s self-cleaning cycle right before you need to cook a major meal (such as holidays) because it can cause your safety thermostat to malfunction.
Dishwashers:
Q: Why isn’t my dishwasher cleaning my dishes?
A: First, check the water. Is it hot enough? You can test this by checking the hot water in your kitchen sink. Another thing that may cause your dishwasher not to clean as well is hard water. Using the wrong type of soap is also an issue. If you see a white film on your dishes or inside your dishwasher, you may need to use less soap or use a dishwasher cleaner periodically.
Washing Machines:
Q: Why isn’t my washing machine filling up with water? Why is it too full?
A: Look at the inlet hoses going to your washing machine. Are there any kinks in them? Also check that the shut-off valves are completely open. Run a load of laundry and watch during the washer’s drain cycle. If you see water around the drainpipe area or overflowing from it, you may need to contact a plumber.
Clothes Dryers:
Q: Why does my dryer take so long to dry clothes?
A: Often, there’s nothing wrong with the dryer itself. Check the dryer’s vent and clean it if necessary. If you let lint build up for too long, it can actually lead to a fire, damaging your dryer, your home, or someone in the home. If you have a gas dryer, it’s especially important to keep the vent clean. Cleaning the lint trap after every load of laundry is recommended. If your dryer needs a full vent cleaning, we can assist you.
Microwaves:
Q: Why isn’t my microwave working? It looks completely dead!
A: Check that the outlet it’s plugged into is working by plugging in another appliance that you know works. If that appliance is dead, make sure the circuit breakers haven’t been tripped. Also remember to always cover any food you cook in the microwave so that nothing gets splashed around the interior. This can lead to burned bits of food building up and turning to carbon, a conductive substance that can lead to sparking, resulting in magnetron damage. Remember, never put aluminum foil in your microwave, and always make certain the dishes you use are microwave safe.
Ice-makers:
Q: Why isn’t the icemaker making ice?
A: Is your ice-maker turned on? To check, make sure the shut-off arm is positioned in its down position. Then make sure the ice-maker’s water supply is on and flowing. It’s possible an old filter has blocked the water flow. Another possibility is that the reverse osmosis system located below your sink may be in need of service.
Garbage Disposals:
Q: Why is there a humming noise coming from the disposal?
A: Your disposal could be jammed. You should have a small angled tool that came with your disposal. Insert it into the socket on the bottom and move it back and forth to dislodge anything stuck in the blades. If you let the disposal hum for several minutes, it may cut off. If it does, you’ll need to press the red reset button on the disposal’s bottom to restart it.
